finished

For those of us who mentor/precept student nurses the last day of the rotation is one of mixed emotion revolving around, boy I am glad to see this nightmare end, to I sure hope they stay in touch because they will be a great nurse someday. When my last student finished a couple of weeks back I was delighted!!!! I was getting home from a shift that ended at 1930 at 2200 hours and felt very frustrated with my inability to redirect my students actions!
For any future students I now will have some distinct baseline goals and guidelines for which I will judge them on during their final rotation; The student will be on time for the start of clinical. The student will take and give report in SBAR format and fully understand the reason for doing so. The student will accurately perform a physical assessment and mental evaluation of the assigned patients. The student will have understanding of the role of physical assessments related to nursing theory and application to clinical practice. The student will accurately document his/her findings, and inform the supervising nurse of any and all abnormal findings including lab values. The student will before dispensing any medications to his/her patients look up and have a basic understanding of all such medications. The student will have a basic understanding of the relationship between the medications they are dispensing and the patient’s diagnosis. The student will dispense medications while adhering to the principle of the "five rights". The student will ask questions prior to undertaking an activity that he/she is not completely sure of. All of the student's actions will be guided by the rule, is this safe for the patient. The student will engage in critical thinking with respect to the process of patient care. The student will treat all patients, family members and hospital staff with the utmost respect.
